Tap one below to see just those options. Our family is split between Charleston, SC and Columbus, OH, so every spot shows both drive times. Then pick a July week and tap See homes to browse rentals big enough for all 20 of us. A lot of hosts already have next July open — those are the ones worth grabbing early.
Lakes are the fairest on drive time for both cities — sorted with the best midpoints first. All of these have big-group homes and pontoons that deliver right to your dock.
A near-perfect midpoint between both cities, near Roanoke. Quiet no-wake coves for easy kid swimming, 500 miles of shoreline, and Bridgewater Plaza for the little ones. This one's fully scouted — see the deep dive below.
The one their parents mentioned — central VA near Fredericksburg, and dead-even for both families. Its famous "private side" stays bath-warm all summer (a plant keeps it warm), which the kids love. Big lake homes that sleep 20 are plentiful — think 8–11 bedroom estates with private beaches and docks.
NC's biggest lake, just north of Charlotte — the most to do (marinas, restaurants, a public beach) and a huge rental selection at every price.
Postcard-pretty by Chimney Rock (yes — the Dirty Dancing lake). Smaller and charming with mountain scenery; pontoons deliver to your dock.
The stunner — crystal-clear blue water in the Blue Ridge foothills with mountain backdrops. Best-in-class swimming; homes lean a bit more upscale.
A 56,000-acre giant on the SC/GA line near Clemson, known for big-group value homes (some sleep 20+), private coves and easy swimming.
The "Jewel of SC" near Columbia — closest for the Charleston crew. A huge 50,000-acre lake with lots of family rentals, easy boating and great value.
Maryland's biggest lake, high in the Appalachians — closest for the Columbus crew. Cool mountain summers, Wisp Resort next door, and tons of big homes.
Drive times are approximate. Every search is pre-set to sleeps-20, 8+ bedrooms for your chosen week. Narrow it to a favorite and I'll pull a shortlist of specific homes with real per-family pricing.
The family usually does a beach trip (hey, Outer Banks 👋). Every search here is locked to a private pool (non-negotiable) and 8+ bedrooms. Heads-up: the beach is a longer haul for the Columbus half — both drive times are on each card so you can weigh it.
Warm, calm Gulf water that's perfect for a 1-year-old, wide soft-sand beaches, and lots of big pool homes at friendly prices. Our best beach pick — fully scouted in the deep dive below.
Closest beach for Charleston — gated, polished, wildly family-friendly, with endless private-pool homes, bike paths and calm beaches. Long haul for Columbus, though.
Your tradition — and the OBX is famous for giant event homes: 8–20 bedrooms, private pools and hot tubs, game rooms, theaters. Corolla/Duck is the luxe, quieter end.
Crystal Coast — a quieter, closer Outer Banks. Big oceanfront pool homes, softer crowds, and gentle south-facing beaches that are great for the little ones.
The Gulf showstopper — sugar-white sand and emerald water. Upscale big homes with private pools, walkable beach towns (Seaside, Rosemary), and calm swimming.
Drive times approximate. Every search is pre-set to sleeps-20, 8+ bedrooms, and a private pool 🏊 for your week. Want a shortlist of specific pool homes for a favorite? Just say which one.
These are our top two: one lake, one beach. I've done the deep dive on each — specific homes to look at, the boat or the pool, where to eat, what to do, and a loose day-by-day. Tap one open to explore; tap it closed to get it out of the way.
The goal: one waterfront home big enough for everyone, with a real dock for the pontoon, easy swimming for the kids, and enough to do that a rainy afternoon is still a blast.
Target: 8+ real bedrooms on a quiet no-wake cove (calm water = safe, easy kid swimming), a dock that fits a 26 ft pontoon, and enough indoors to make a rainy afternoon fun.
Our target is around $15k/week for the house — up to ~$20k only if it's absolutely perfect. Big, fun, waterfront, right-sized for us. No need for the ultra-luxury mega-homes.
These searches are pre-tuned to waterfront + big-group + dock — tap to browse live listings and prices open for our dates:
One large house split across families almost always beats a cluster of hotels or small cabins — and everyone's actually together.
A 26 ft pontoon is the sweet spot — big enough for a crowd, great for tubing, swim stops and sunset cruises. Best part: they'll deliver it right to the house dock and pick it up, so no ramps or trailering.
Put the Ice Cream Boat tracker on someone's phone — the kids lose their minds when it pulls up to the dock. 🍦
The hub at Hales Ford Bridge: arcade, mini golf 15 ft over the water, movie theatre, rock wall, bungee trampoline, carnival games & ice cream.
Don't miss: feed the giant carp, $1/bag (benefits Make-A-Wish).
Swimming beach, easy hiking trails, and kayak/canoe/paddleboard rentals — a great low-key day for the little ones.
Westlake Safari Mini Golf and Hot Shots Family Fun Center (Rt 122) for extra rainy-day and evening options.
Tubing & wakeboarding behind the pontoon · a whole-family sunset cruise · anchoring in a quiet cove for a swim · float mats off the dock · early-morning paddleboard on glassy water · fireworks if a marina hosts them reunion week.
Not a schedule to stress over — just a rhythm so nobody's asking "what are we doing today?" every morning.
Check in (usually mid-afternoon), claim rooms, grocery run, first dinner together, sunset off the dock.
Boat delivered to the dock — orientation, easy cruise, first swim stop, tubing for the brave. Ice cream boat watch.
Slow morning, paddleboards, pool/dock time. Evening at Bridgewater Plaza — mini golf over the water + arcade.
Tubing & wakeboarding, a boat-up lunch at a waterfront grill, feed the carp, afternoon swim.
Golden-hour photos on the dock, big group dinner at the house, games / bowling / movie night.
State Park beach & hikes for some, fishing or a long cruise for others, a Homestead Creamery run, last sunset toast.
Favorite things one more time, pack the non-essentials, final family bonfire & s'mores.
Boat pickup, clean-up crew, hugs, and "same time next year?" 🤍
The best Gulf pick for our crew — calm, bath-warm water for the little ones, huge pool homes that sleep 20 at real value, and a week's worth of family fun. And a much smoother drive than the Corolla haul.
Pre-filtered to sleeps-20, 8+ bedrooms, private pool, for your chosen July week:
See 8+ BR pool homes ↗Local big-group specialists — often bigger homes and better rates than the apps, with wide 2027 availability:

Check in, grocery run to stock the big kitchen, first toes-in-the-sand sunset, pizza night in.
Ease in — umbrellas on the sand, pool for the kids, nap for the 1-yo, low-key dinner at the house.
Morning dolphin cruise, lunch at LuLu's (kids hit the play area), afternoon pool.
Beach morning, then SkyWheel + arcade + the laser show in the evening. Ice cream, obviously.
Golden-hour beach photos (matching shirts?), big group dinner out at Fisher's or Cobalt.
Waterville / go-karts for the big kids, back-bay pontoon or fishing for others, the zoo for the littles.
Favorites one more time, a sandcastle contest, s'mores, pack the non-essentials.
Clean-up crew, hugs, "same time next year?" 🤍
The budget calculator below works for this too — just zero out the boat line (or use it for a rental day on the back bay).
